I am looking at a G with a stuck engine in my area. About How much I would have to spend to get this tractor running if I have to do a total rebuild .Engine has been stuck for about 7 years

Don't count it dead till your sure it is. My 1935 JD-B was stuck for 10 plus years and I free it up. Make sure it does not have water in the cylinders first. If it does you need to remove the water first. Next you need to jack up the front end so as to be able to fill the cylinders with ATF and get to the whole piston. Also pour as much ATF down the exhaust as you can and let it sit. Back when my B was stuck I made a sort of wrench that fit the 2 holes in the flywheel and it was about 10 foot long. I stuck it in the flywheel and pulled hard and almost hit my self in the head when it popped free

I agree with old, ATF is the 1st thing to try. I cut it 50-50 with acetone to help it get into all the nooks and crannies. If it drains through, keep it topped up. Patience is on your side. You might want to pull the valve cover enough to squirt some loose juice on the valve stems. If one if them is stuck too then getting the pistons loose can wham the cam against it with disappointing results. I decline to say how I know that. . . G's are great! Good luck.

More than likely one or more valves are stuck. Take off valve cover and make sure they are loose before trying anything else to free it up.

On JD "G" what you need to rebuild it is crap shot. I have owned 2 JD "G" tractors they both had head gaskets that would leak over winter. If I started then regular it would blow the coolant out. If not then I would have to pull the plugs and turn it over. My point being is they were known to have head gasket issues. So when they are stuck it usually is stuck hard. Meaning take the jug off and press the pistons out. Then usually the jugs needs over bored. So your looking new pistons and rings. So an overhaul can start at $2000 and go up. All depending what you want to end up with. The fellow turning them into pulling tractors will spend $10K on the motor.

What I would do is get a bore camera. You can buy them that hook to your smart phone for under $15 online. Take the spark plugs out and look in the cylinder. If it is full of rust and water your looking at a different block or a rebore. If you buy it and it is lightly stuck remove the valve cover and remove the push rods before you try and turn it over. I am 100% sure that some or all the valves will be stuck. You can damage other things trying to turn the motor with them stuck.

Contrary to the luck Old and others on here talk about, I have never had a stuck motor that did not need internal work done to it. So I usually just pull the cylinder head and go from there. A JD 2 banger head gasket set is not that much money.

Also if you free it up and the bores are pitted you can still run it that way. You will use oil but if your just playing with it, that will not make much difference. The days of working these old girls are over for 98% of them.

I agree with you JD on stuck pistons, the ones on the G are very large which gives a lot of surface area to stick.

The last tractor model 70 I did had been sitting with both cylinders full of concocktion that was supposed to free it up for over a year. I bought the tractor and fought with it for a couple of weeks finally pulled cylinders pistons rods and all. You never know how bad they are stuck till diving into them. Have fun.

Here lately 3500 seems to come up a lot

Machine work ,boring is really gotten high around here and that a big lick right off the bat along with your rebore kit.

Valves and springs, gskt set and the list goes on and on
