1020 Gas wants to keep running

My 1020 gas wants to try to keep running when I turn off the key. It sputters and dies after a few RPM's. It is doing it intermittently. I also seem to have a bit of ignition knock. I believe this is a distributor/timing issue and possibly points need adjusted or replaced? I haven't had time to mess with it given time of the year. It is going to rain Saturday afternoon so I plan on looking at it then. Thanks!

I would be looking at the solenoid on the carb (item #24). It is suppose to shut the fuel off once you turn the ignition to the off position. I assume that the needle is stuck open allowing fuel to go through.

Mine does not have the solenoid on it or that part of the wiring harness. I knew this shortly after I bought it, but never had an issue with fuel/carb until this year when I installed the new fuel tank.

Timing is definitely off. You may have other issues such as overheating, points, or a carb issue. The good news is the carb isn't much different than your old MT. Do idle it down a minute or two before cutting it off. This will help.

I always try and idle things down unless they cut out on their own. My wife, not so much.

I'll start with timing and points. Temp gauge never goes much above the middle so should be good there. That shut-off solenoid is not cheap so hopefully timing and some clean up with distributor will fix it.

If your talking about what is called dieseling that is caused by hot spots In the engine. Carbon builds up in places and stays hot and ignites the gas that gets sucked in while the engine is spinning down,. One way to help clean the carbon out is to run 1 quart of ATF in 5 gal of gas.

A friend of mine told me this could be my issue as well. He told me to add some marvel mystery oil to fuel and crankcase next time it is a quart low and that would help clean up any carbon deposits.

I had a 440 gas crawler and the only way I could get it to shut off without dieseling was to either stall it out or I ended up backing the idle speed adjustment way off so when you held the throttle lever at idle it would die.

MMO is about twice the cost of ATF and ATF does the same thing as MMO does only it does not smell as good

A simple thing to try - idle the engine down, shut off the switch, THEN immediately push the throttle lever wide open.

I never have any run-on when I do that. I guess it throws the air-fuel mix out of balance.

Of course, if your timing has somehow slipped, it should be corrected.

I think either you or Brittany Hill before provided a wiring diagram for me for behind the dash. I will need to make up my own wire for the solenoid since mine is long gone. Either way I suppose it has been 3 years with this tractor and I have not done anything in terms of a tune up on the distributor so I will likely do that anyways.
