I am getting a grating or grinding type sound when turning with the brakes. Perfectly quiet when the brakes are locked together. Can stall the engine if I want with no noise. The noise when turning seems to come from the opposite side of the brake being applied. Thanks for any advice on what could be causing the noise.

When I had a similar issue on a 4440, Tim S on here told me it was either the brake discs or a bearing. Luckily it ended up being the brakes, they had warped and were causing a grinding noise if I got on them more than a light touch.

At 40 years plus of age the brakes are usually worse than you think. The first sign will be debris from the brakes getting in screen. Not a big job but requires some time and you need to get everything clean. We had a 4840 with not that many hours that the brake linings were faulty.

This is the new to me tractor from my "Diamond in the rough" post from last fall. It had sat for maybe 6-10 years before I got it, long story. I am fixing various issues as they come up. Both hyd filters were changed after getting it running. Sump screen was perfectly clean. Finally able to put a disc behind it recently and discovered noise when turning. My concern is that the noise seems to be from the side opposite of the brake being used when turning. Zero noise when using both brakes together.

Axle bearing is my first thought,,warped brake disc is my second thought,,pull the final drives and look,,it will be worth the effort to see for sure..

I am working on getting someone to look at this as I don't have the means to pull the finals off here at home. If the noise is only happening when turning with brakes vs. using both brakes when driving straight, would this point to a differential issue instead of the brakes themselves? Thanks to all for the replies.
