4520/4620 vs 5020

I wanted a new perspective.

I have a couple 5020's, all row crops with three points and pto, but i have found a couple 4520/4620's that are coming up for sale. Have kinda thought about selling one of the 5020's and maybe going after one of the 45/4620's. Ive never been around any of the 45/4620's, just kinda wondering what everybody here thinks of a comparison between the two. My 5020 doesnt have a cab or ROPS, but the 45/4620's have cabs. I dont think i could get hurt either way, just wondering what anybodies thoughts are.

I had a 5010 for a few years and was not impressed. I now have a 4520 that has the 4620 engine. Has intercooler and the injection pump is driven off the front timing gears as well as having the bigger rosa master pump. Most if not all 4520's left the factory with the small injection pumps. They are hard to get parts for and they tend to start hard and smoke some with age. Ours has the fuel set at about 170 hp although we never use near that hard. Hardest job is chopping hay and corn silage. I like the way it handles compared to a 5010 or 5020 and it seems to have much more low end torque especially when compared to the 5010 I owned. The original 4520's had problems with the air cleaner as they would sometimes set the element on fire and feed it to the engine. Most tractors have been updated. The last 4520's left the factory with the 4620 engine and intercooler. If you are going to use it I would not buy a 4520 with the original engine. Tom

Collector market might be driving those prices up way high right now ?
For one to use I'd go up to something newer with a sound gard cab !

There is a case to be made for going with something that has a sound guard cab, but cash in hand against what is out there makes a difference. I have been able to build all my operations without going in debt and i wont go in debt for a tractor, so if i find what i think is a good deal on a 45/4620 then i can make that work. All of my tractors have appreciated in value with very little out of pocket expense, mainly cleaning them up and putting more sweat into them than anything.

Everything i have does fill a need and a function, but to have something that is make a bit more nimbler with the same horsepower as a 5020 could be very functional for me, i will always have a place for a 5020, just wanted a few more opinions on them to see if it makes sense cause ive never been around them.

The 4620s were good tractors and the ones with syngro trans don't sell that well. A 4520w/4620 updated engine is about the same. The turbo will help power as 5020 were underpowered for their weight. There are still a couple around here with M&W turbos on them

45-4620 are very fun to drive.
The gears shift better on 45-4620 than 5020s. But not near as good as the 4020s due to the much bigger syncros.

The 5020s are also very nimble tractors even if they do not look like it. The 5020 is exactly a 1.5 times 4020. They are not way underpowred for their size. without weights, they have about same power to weight ratio than a 4020. Their NA engine does about same sound, jut a little bit more, and they like running at lower RPMs.
Now if you are driving a 5020 with cast duals and fluids and 4 big cast weights and double stack weight, it WILL feel underpowered when you take of in 8th gear.
Again, someone did not put that much weight on them if they were "Way underpozered for their size".

The 5020 tranny and the 4520 SR tranny is really about same strength, by looking at the size of the gears. It is hard to differentiate some of the gears when side to side; The 4520 final drive is slightly smaller in diameter but quite wider. No problem in their transmission.

5020s in general are more plentiful and parts are easier to find for them, but 4620s are not too hard to fix because they are very solid, and a lot of their tranny guts is same as Deere 7020/7520 4WD tractors. 4620 and 4320 engine blocks are the same, and elec system of the 4620 is like the 4020.

fdt860,

thanks for the interesting read, i do enjoy reading your tech perspectives. I spent a lot of time on a 5010 when i was younger and i really enjoyed that time in my life. My 5020 is a row crop with 3pt, hydraulics, pto, and really does run out good. It does have a few little issues that i need to tend to over the winter, but thats just what winter is for, i have considered throwing a turbo on it. And i am really not into the 5020 for all that much money so i do feel with it i am ahead.

a 45/4620 would maybe be a great addition, but i am starting to think that i could get the same jobs done with the 5020 that i would or could use my 5020 on.

Considering replacing a known tractor with an unknown is always a tough choice...maybe right now isnt the time to make such a move. but i will watch those three and see what they bring...
