4020 tachometer

The tachometer on my 4020 and started jumping. I assume that it?s sort of in its death throws? Is there anything I can do in the way of lube that might prolong his life? There is around 6000 hours on it.

I heard there are places that rebuild old tachs. I would look into that before I bought a new one. I bought a new one and they are junk. They don't last and never read very accurate. That's a genuine jd replacement not an aftermarket version.

Ours is stuck at 6949.1 hours and has been as long as I have been driving it. (35 years). The rpms read correctly still. I have seen a bad cable cause them to that also.

Star Speedometer 386-569-5284 has ad in Green Magazine.I get a laugh out of people that install Mexican made replacement tach with extra digits and it says horas instead of hours and seller says it is original.

Are the new (replacement) tachs really as bad as some say? Or is it just a gamble? The tach on my 1020 doesnt work, it'd be awfully handy to have it working again. I see the ones on this site are around $190 with cable, just wondering about the durability and quality.
What drives them inside the engine? Never took one apart before.

I put a new tach in a 4000 two years ago and it lasted ninety hours .The next one ran to fast and the third one lasted just a few hours. I sent my original one to Star Speedometer he rebuilt it for two hundred forty bucks with a new cable. It is still working fine .So the three I had were pure junk.

I just unhooked the cable at the dash and oiled it with some 30 weight oil. I didn't get a lot to go down the cable but it did seem to be a big improvement.

Might just need a new cable mine does this every so often and then the cable breaks replace the cable and it?s good to go again
