hydraulic connectors for JD newbie - embarrassingly simple

OK... this is going to seem like a really stupid question, but first time I've tried (and failed) to connect hydraulics on a borrowed JD 4020 tractor. First, the back story... I'm no farmer (pretty obvious with this question), but my father in law helps me make some hay off of a small acreage I own. Yesterday, we were baling, and had hydraulic problems with my father-in-laws Farmall. We borrowed neighbor's JD 4020 to finish the job. Had to buy some adapters so the pioneer ends would fit. Everything worked well.

Well today, I wanted to move a couple of pieces of equipment and then return the tractor to my neighbor. Problem is... both my father in law and neighbor are at work until later this evening. I figured "I can do this" (although figuring out the gear shifting pattern on the JD was a challenge). I plugged one hose from a haybine into the JD. Plugged the second hose in, and it popped back out. I could not get it to go back in. I noticed that the female end on this one was pushed back slightly compared to the other. I messed around trying to switch hoses, etc... and now both of the female ends are pushed back slightly and won't accept the male ends. There's a little locking lever that is different from what I'm used to, and messing around with that might be part of the problem???

I'd love to get this haybine moved and the tractor moved back to the neighbor's for a couple of reasons... first, we have storms coming in this afternoon, and second, my father in law is probably going to roll his eyes and think I'm pretty helpless haha. So, based on the descripition above, can anyone give me the "John Deere hydraulic connectors for dummies" explanation for what I did wrong, and what might help me save face ;). Any help would be much appreciated.

From the front side of the paired female coupler unit, push the individual barrels back. (They protrude through the front.)

Thanks for the reply! Before I run back out to the field to look... the female couplers are in a box with a flip up cover. Are you saying that I should be able to see the barrels coming through that box from the front end side of the tractor? And then I just push them back?

Yes, reach underneath the remote (to the front side) and you can push the receptacle back towards you. Sometimes you have to take a hammer turned sideways and tap (emphasize tap!) it back towards you if they are stiff.
