2040 steering

My wife has a 2040 that the steering is shot and she is really in love with this, her garden tractor

Well I went on line and looked at a unit and that may be the way to go or whats there to buy to repair the unit

After all the tractors Ive worked on Ive never done a steering sector for one of these tractors but have been informed that I will soon be doing one

If tractor has 3 cyl engine one needs to know if serial number is below or above 266749 to determine if tractor has open or closed center power steering. Shaft can be removed/resealed without removing cast housing from tractor by removing steering wheel then remove large nut then turn shaft CCW to get shaft out of housing so 6 large o-rings in housing can be R&R.

DO NOT disassemble steering shaft components unless absolutely necessary because shim location on shaft is very important for correct operation of PS.

Seal kit for PS is AT315816 Seal Kit - ADD 79.94 USD

How are all the other steering parts? If all the other parts are loose a new or rebuilt steering box will do you no good. The bell crank assembly under the front end is the most common cause of loose steering on Deere utility tractors. Also check tie rods and drag links. Sometimes the arm inside the tractor can come loose as well. Check over all those parts before tearing into the steering box. Tom

The serial number is 245930,the worn moving parts to the steering I replaced for her about a year ago

She uses it to cultivate and I did it for her the other day and was lucky to stay in the back yard

You know the drill, your not out of gas if the needle moves, anyway back to the steering,no leaks just serious play in the box and Ive never done one,do plenty of two cyl but none of these

Have you checked to make sure the steer arm bolt is tight under the plug on the left side??I have seen them work loose..and the bell crank arm on the front end is a problem area too...

As others stated check for loose bearings &/or worn bellcrank(key 1) shaft.

as stated all the moving parts have been replaced ,drag-link and bushings were bad not the box, thats where we are folks
