Putting Starter into 1950 A

Do any of you have suggestions on the "easiest" way to put the starter back into a 1950 A (bottom mounted)? As you know, it is heavy and there is not much room to work. I have installed it before but "there must be an easy way"..??? Thanks for any advice!

Other than making sure the battery cable is disconnected, eat your Wheaties & you might get lucky & have it slide right into place on the 1st try.

If you have a good friend that doesn't owe you any money, enlist his/her help. One can position and the other get bolts started. Celebrating victory with an adult cold beverage is optional but desirable.

Just had the starter out of my 70 gas and back in by myself without any problems. Really surprised how well it went. Only other one I have done was my A or AR, can not really remember which only that it was a lot harder. Both were done on a creeper on a cement floor. I know I did my 1953 AR and it was the one that seemed hard, maybe because it sets so close to the floor. Just be careful with all the weight over your face, would be nice to have a helper just to chase sockets and hand you wrenches as needed.

Take a couple of bolts same size but longer than your anchor bolts. Cut heads off of longer bolts and use hack saw or angle grinder to cut a screwdriver slot in end of bolts.

Screw a couple of these studs in convenient holes. Slide starter over the studs and work into position. These studs will hold starter in place and oriented while you install bolt in empty hole. Take one stud out and install bolt. Take second stud out and install bolt.

With slots in end of studs a screw driver will remove them if past finger tight or binding.

What everyone else said.

If you have trouble making it fit up, it is probably the battery cable has slipped down in the way. It seems like the battery cable gives me more trouble than the starter itself.

GREAT comments! I am going to get a box of Wheaties and get to work! The cut off bolts is an interesting idea too. May try it. THANKS! As a last resort, will get lots of "adult beverages" and that should do the trick!!! Agree on the battery cable thing! It was a problem last time also. Take care! Thanks again!

Never done it (yet) so I might be missing something. What about using a floor jack to lift and hold while you put bolts in?

I found it easier to pull the flywheel and then you can get to the cabling....I've got a handy little crane and it's no problem...I always tune up the teeth on the flywheel....
