confused about what happened with my 4430

Hey all,

I was using my 4430 to bale hay a couple days ago, and the tractor suddenly dropped down to ultra low RPMs and rolled black smoke out the muffler. I shut it down immediately, but then tried to restart it. It fired up immediately, but then dropped back to low RPMs and rolled black smoke. So I let it sit while I worked on getting the rest of the hay in. A mechanically inclined friend came over the next day and tried starting it again, same result. Yesterday another friend came over and I asked him to help me pull it back up to the buildings to work on it. The dang tractor fired right up and ran fine!

The only thought anyone has that makes any sense is that the turbo locked up and was acting like an engine brake, but WHY would it suddenly start running fine again??? The new theory floating around is a fin broke off the turbo and locked it up and fell out after awhile. I have a guy coming Tuesday to look at it, I'm seriously confused. I have 80 tons of poultry litter to spread with it after we dry up again. 4.5" of rain last night.

Even with the turbo locked up it should rev up and run, but would lack turbo boost horsepower when placed under load.

Not sure what you've got going on, but thoroughly check out the whole air intake system for any possible restrictions.

I can see a bad turbo causing this,,also check the Anroid line going from the intake manifold ..around the front of the engine to the injector pump.

I would check the intake for restrictions like Bob said. There was a serial number break on the intake pipe, I believe later ones had a nearly 180 degree rubber hose that connected to the turbo, if the rubber is soft and with enough restriction like a plugged air filter it could easily suck the hose flat.

I’ve seen similar things happen on a 4440 where the hose would suck flat going to the turbo, ended up finding a bird stuck in the air box inlet. How it got there is a mystery, but I have my theory’s.

We looked it over pretty well Tuesday and couldn't find a thing wrong. I hauled manure all day yesterday and it never missed a beat. So I'm still confused.

I've been fighting the black sludge in the fuel tank of my 4430- will shut it down quickly from running perfectly. Mowed 5 acres and had to stop and clean the sediment bowl pre filter six time to finish the field.

I'm not familiar with the specific intake plumbing on a 4430 but I agree with the other recommendations of a hose possibly collapsing. The hoses would have to be physically inspected from the inside as well to rule out potential delamination of the rubber where a section of faulty rubber acts like a flapper/check valve.

You also can't rule out a restriction on the exhaust side either. A lack of air flow through the engine will cause black smoke regardless of what end is being restricted. It may be a long shot but a question for the 4430 gurus: can the baffling in the muffler come apart & restrict the outlet?

I have never seen a 4430 intake hose collapse,,not saying it's not possible...but unlikely...
