John Deere M PTO

I've just begun using the John Deere M PTO to run a fertilizer spreader. I noticed that the PTO housing is smoking after the first pass in the field. Any suggestions as to what is causing this please.

You might consider checking the level of the transmission oil.

Remove the transmission filler plug on the right side of the tractor.

Add S.A.E. 90W to the bottom of the threads if necessary.

Hope this helps.

If it has plenty of gear oil in it then you could have a bad bearing in the PTO quill that is getting hot.

Like James I suspect you are low on oil. Nothing there but a brass bushing so running dry will hurt quick. Worst case is pulling the housing and replacing the bushing and scooping out 60 years of crud from the bottom.
