I just got done overhauling a John Deer R model. Just the main engine is complete, but I was able to pull it off with another tractor. I also had no issue starting it with a B model and a belt.
A local machine shop helped me out with the crank, head and injectors. The rest was good ol hard work.
The Flywheel that was on there had come loose at one point and wore down the crank. My grandad who before passing owned the tractor had put another flywheel on there (after cracking the first trying to tighten it down). But it also cracked. He hammered pieces of metal in there to stiffen it up and ran it like that for years!! I was amaized that the damn thing hadn't come apart!!
But anyway, the machine shop was able to build the crank back up and then turn it back to original size. My dad found a newish flywheel in Kansas on an 18wheeler run and brought it to me. Once the injectors and head were gotten back... not much left but assembly.
I also manufactured some pipe and hose for coolant to take the place of where the pony goes. Once the R budget goes back up, I'll be overhauling the pony as well. I'll be glad to have this thing back to it's original form.
I'm trying to upload some pictures, but either I'm an idiot, or my internet is too slow for it. I'm in the middle of the gulf at the moment. If I figure it out, I'll get them uploaded.
