Low oilpressure JD 60

I have very low oil pressure on my 60 to the point I have to shut it off. I changed the oil to straight 40wt, and I changed the filter, and I changed the gauge to an original JD gauge, and still after 10 min of running, the pressure starts out high and then goes low below the L.

I have the top off and I blew air in the oil pressure line and I see bubbles and air coming from the bottom of the pump , which I assume is correct, but no where else I can see. I think my next step is to plastic gauge the rod bearings. I put rings in it 18 years ago but never use the tractor more then a few min a year just to start it up. With the top off, I noticed there are no cotter pins in the bearing nuts, which I must have forgot to do. Maybe they worked loose and this is causing low pressure.

If the bearings check out ok, I think I will take the pump out to examine it but I can't see how you can get in there to disconnect those line. Is there any secret to getting these lines disconnected?

Is it common for these pumps to wear out?

Chances are that it is worn main bearings causing the low oil pressure. check for vertical crankshaft play. Normal clearance is 0.004-.006".

I have tried that and turned it all the way in and it has no affect on the pressure once the oil is heated up. When I first start the engine and the oil is cold, then adjusting the regulator changes the pressure, but after 10 min, the pressure goes to almost zero, and no amount of adjustment affects it.

I would have to think it would be main/rod bearings or the pump itself. Pump is a much cheaper place to start from my experience. I had the same problem on a John Deere M. Plastigage reading was slightly out of specification, so I took the crank out to be machined for new bearings all around. $500 later and seeing no improvement in oil pressure on reassembly, I determined the oil pump was shot. $100 used oil pump later and it ran great with plenty of pressure.

(quoted from post at 23:46:03 06/07/18) Chas - are you aware that you can adjust the pressure relief valve?

The pressure relief valve does not control minimum pressure . The pressure relief valve limits the max pressure .

The clearances of the main (crankshaft) bearings govern oil pressure. The pump serves the mains first. As stated as temps rise (oil becomes thinner) pressure goes down. If true , it is not the pump, but worn out main (crank) bearings. HTH

I just took the bottom of the pump off, and everything looked good. I checked the clearances and the idler gear was .002 and the drive gear was .004 to .005 . The book calls for between .002 to .006 for the clearance between the teeth and pump wall. So it looks like the pump is not my problem.

I also plastic gauged the rod bearings and they come in at .003 , well with in spec.

If I took the 60 to a tractor mechanic, what would it likely cost to replace the main bearings, verses buying another good working JD 60 with good pressure. I only paid $800 for this tractor in 1993.

What is a 60 worth to sell with low oil pressure, but with good compression, good working PTO clutch, no leaks, straight metal, 70% tread on rears, new fronts, no power steering , no 3 pnt what is is worth?

Like someone else said, check the oil filter housing for warping or bad gasket, it can leak and make your oil pressure horrible
