What weight of oil is best for a M engine? The manual we just got says 20W but I dont see that except in synthetic at the local farm store. Can I use the detergent oil or should I try to find non detergent? Can I use the same oil for the touch o matic?

My buddy just put SAE 30 in it but now we're unsure if we should of done that.

Note the service manual, along with the operator's manual, recommends S.A.E. 20 in the Summer and S.A.E. 10W in the Winter.

We use Rotella 15-40 in our M, MTs, and 40s.

The operator's manual and service manual both recommend S.A.E. 10W.

What about non detergent vs detergent oil? Does modern 15W-40 have a lot of additives included?

Maybe we're over thinking this one.

We use detergent oil in the crankcase an non detergent in the Touch-O-Matic.

You might consider researching the various motor oil manufacturers for their special "[i:654c4848f0]blend[/i:654c4848f0]" of additives.

Tractor Supply carries non-detergent 10 and 20 weight in 2.5 gallon jugs under their Traveler brand. I ran this in my MT with no issues. I think you would want to stay clear of the detergent oils in the TOM because it could cause foaming.
 
I use Rotella 15W-40 in all 12 of my antique tractors. One of them is a JD 420, which is similar to your M.
Buy it on sale at Wal-Mart.
