John Deere 70 Cranking Motor Starter

Hi,
Yesterday I went to start my 70 Diesel and everything worked as it should, but while I was letting it warm up a bit, the starter suddenly kicked on again and wouldn't quit. I didn't have a wrench handy to unhook the battery cable and eventually it got hot enough that there was a small flame where the battery cable hooks on to the starter button on top of the starter and the end of the cable melted off. Any ideas on what may have happened?

The part number I found in my manual for the starter is AF2341R and they list it as a Delco Remy 1107157, then they listed a sub number of AR11154R. Of course none of these are available from John Deere and I'm wondering if anyone knows of a source for these starters, or if they can be rebuilt, a source of the parts needed. I'll take it to a mechanic if it needs to be rebuilt.

Or is it time to do the conversion to a 12 volt starter and eliminate the pony motor?

Thanks.

The battery cable connects to a mechanical starting switch on top of the starter.

That switch shorted, stuck, or fell apart causing the starter to run and eventually burning the starter switch.

Begin by removing the starter switch and see what shape the contact protruding from the starter is in.

You MAY have got lucky and not destroyed the actual starter, and only need to clean up the contact and replace the starter switch.

IF it didn't run long enough/fast enough to "throw the solder" from the commutator.

Parts likely still can be found, thank goodness for the 'net.

Does the starter have the original Delco tag on it yet, numbers I'm seeing are 1107157 or 1107189.

Do you have a parts catalog, the DEERE catalog lists the Delco part numbers, as well.

If not, you can download it for FREE 9in .pdf format) at the link below.

Figure out which starter you have and what you need and start GOOGLING with the Delco numbers for the parts you need, or see what can be found using the part number for the complete unit, if needed.!

I haven't removed it yet as I have a farm show this weekend. According to the parts book, I believe it's the Delco Remy 1107157 starter.
