JD 300 Roosa Master fuel Shutoff

I have a JD 300 with a Roosa Master JDB331AL2405 injection pump. Had it for 20 years, and it has always been reliable.

Recently, it has had starting problems. Crank and crank, no fire, no smoke. I discovered that if I gently tap-tap on the injector pump, I get the "click" and she starts right up. There is good 12 volts on the terminal and the ground strap is in place and secure.

After it sat all winter, now I can't get the "click", even with a 12 volt jumper and lots of taps.

I am thinking the solenoid actuated fuel shutoff is clogged with crud or rusted shut. I am unfamiliar with these injector pumps. My question is, can I take the 3 screws off the top cover of the pump and get good access to the fuel shutoff mechanism? Or will tiny parts and springs shoot out?

Many thanks,
Richard

If the pump has the early flapper type solenoid, those usually needed the throttle opened up a bit for starting. Later plunger type solenoids will pull in at idle if plunger is not sticking. The cover can be removed, IF the screws will come out. Construction equipment pumps are the worst when it comes to getting those screws out without breaking..

Many thanks. I finally got a chance to work on this machine. The cover came right off and sure enough, the mechanism was sticking. After I freed it up and reassembled, the tractor started right up!! And, no leaks!

I do have the flapper style solenoid. It seems to me that the plunger style would give more pull. I will replace it with that type if the problem re-occurs.
