John Deere 730 oil/diesel drips out manifold to exhaust pipe

I am trying to get a little life out of a JD 730 diesel that I picked up at a sale this spring. When it has been running for a few minutes there is a noticeable drip from the had to manifold mating surface and also at the junction of the manifold and the exhaust pipe. It is a black liquid but I can't tell whether it's unburnt diesel or engine oil. Should I be thinking cam wear or ring wear or both? And will adjusting the tappets help eek a little extra life out of the cam if the lobes are shot? The tractor is rough but starts and runs. I had it on a 3 bottom plow in a hay field in april and it wouldn't stay in second and wouldn't pull it in 3rd so I figure this poor thing needs an overhaul this winter. Until then I thought I would put a 4 row front mount cultivator on it if it will handle it.

Thanks,

Pete

Sounds like "wet stacking", diesels can have it with light load use. Gets worse as the engine compression slowly drops over time. Usually clears up under heavy loads, but might return when the load is removed. Doesn't hurt anything, just makes a mess. Diesels have a much cooler exhaust temp at no load than gas engines do..
