Just bought an R that has been sitting for a few years, after I go through the fuel system can I prime the big motor with motor oil before trying to start it. The pony does run but I don't want to turn big motor over dry.
thanks

I have a pump up air garden sprayer that I've removed the nozzle from and installed a fitting to screw into the 1/8" NPT gauge ports on engines. I bought it for the purpose (under $20), and only use it to prelube engines.

Disconnect the oil gauge, attach the sprayer/pre-luber, poor in a couple of quarts of your favorite engine oil, pump up the air pressure, and the engine oiling system gets pressurized and prelubed.

Is it that critical that you can't roll it a bit with the starting engine to get oil pressure up by the "conventional" way?

Seems to me a new oil filter and new engine oil is all that is needed, then roll it a bit without compression until oil pressure gauge shows pressure.

You'll be fine, just crank it. Unless the oil was completely drained, and left for years, things stayed fairly lubed.
