fastening pto shaft to tractor

a friend of mine has a small john deere tractor. i would call it a compact. he has a tiller attachment for it. the pto coupling is most difficult to fasten. a ring around the pto shaft has to be pulled towards the rear, while pushing the shaft onto the tractor pto. it does not want to do this. after quite a bit of huffing and puffing, finally can get it on. do you all have a slick trick for fastening the pto shaft to the tractor?

You dont have to pull the ring back until you get it lined up and started on. Once started then you pull the ring back and hold it with one thumb. I just got one of those myself.

yes, we did, and some w d 40 on top. takes 2 of us and some strong hands

should not be this difficult

the w d 40 helped. i use penetrant on nuts that are difficult to thread onto bolts

Yes, PB blaster. Think they make a silicone spray I use on my truck lock out hubs that works well without the smell. I also back up as close as needed then hook the PTO up
first to get more room. Still not my favorite job hooking up the tiller, the bush hog gives more room and longer PTO shaft.

(quoted from post at 10:59:49 06/05/18) Just me, but I always use PB Blaster. MUCH better than WD.

i prefer kroil. however, i was at friends house and that is what he had. lol

for some reason lube helps , in situations such as this. i have had trouble threading nuts onto bolts, sprayed a bit of penetrant on the threads and it went right on. ??? hmmm

If you pull that ring back and turn it a tad to the left it will stay back to let you slide the PTO shaft on with both hands available, one to slightly turn the shaft and the other to slide it on.
