1020 PTO lever problem

I have a 1966 JD 1020 Model 48 and it has both the rear 3 pt PTO and an auxiliary PTO facing front underneath for my wood splitter. Thefront PTO is fine, but the rear PTO won't engage. It was working fine, and then it just quit. The lever that turns the PTO on and off feels like it is no longer connected to anything. It just flops back and forth now. :(

Had one in my shop last summer wit ha problem like that. The slide coupler on it had broken and I had to replace it. Not at all a fun job since you have to split the tractor and disassemble the transmission to replace it. I don't remember if it has a side plate that you can remove to check it but I know you can pull the PTO shaft out to check if that is what is wrong.

Strong chance the pin in the disconnect shaft is sheared.#2 in the pic, I have removed the rockshaft and used a medium size needle nose vise grip to hold a new pin and drive it in..an ornery place to work..but doable..

Which is the rockshaft? Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I just bought this tractor last week and have lots to learn...

It's that large cover that has the upper 3point arms in it,,about 10 1/2" bolts hold it down,, it will need to be lifted straight up about 6" to clear an arm that stays with the tractor, you can lift off the upper seat bolt..I will walk you through it when your ready,, as most on here know i don't like this model but I have worked on them for 40 years..when they are good they are a great tractor...when they are bad they are "very" bad...

I will second in thinking the pin broke on the PTO shifter. Common if you push hard trying to get the PTO to engage when the gears are not lined up. Just hold tension against the lever and let the clutch out slowly an it will pop right in.

Tim is also correct in how you repair it. It is not really that hard of a repair IF you have much mechanical skill. Removing the rockshaft/three point lift housing is not hard using lifting devise; engine hoist works the best. If your trying to lift it off by hand you will more than likely damage the draft linkage or the gasket trying to get it back together. BTDT. LOL

Some advice on things to do while you have the rockshaft housing off.
1) I usually go through the three point lift piston seal/oring and the orings on the control valves/backing plugs while I have the cover off. The cost of the additional parts is small verses having to take the entire housing off again.
2) You just about always will have to adjust the three point/draft control linkage when you reinstall the cover. This will take a service manual to do. I actually like the IT manual description of how to do this better than the JD manual's. The number is JD-37 right on this site for $29.95. They also have a copy of the JD manual for around $93. For in depth hydraulic repairs on these tractors you would be better off with the JD manual.

I'll add to what the other stated if you remove rockshaft housing be sure to replace quad-ring part #T17882 in RH frt of top of trans case before installing new gasket. This quad ring seals where hyd pressure travels from trans case to RS housing.
