So far so Good

Follow up message on the 730 taper lock flywheel issue.. Removed the flywheel, checked it with my eye's.. Sand blasted it inside & outside. Had it magna fluxed & checked. The firm thought it was OK, no cracks found at the time.. Removed the ring gear & flipped it over. Replaced the one bolt that was loose. re-torqued to 110 off Gave it a spray bomb lite coat of paint, removed the collet & tried in the flywheel appeared OK. After installation I ended up with .007 end play. Ran it for 20 minutes & rechecked endplay.. Still at .007. Left the flywheel cover off & used the tractor 6.5 hours on a roller harrow for oats ground, rechecked the flywheel end play still at .007.. As of now it has roller harrowed 40 acre's of oats ground twice, once to just roll in the oats without the teeth set. I've checked 4 times now & reinstalled the cover after 6.5 hours. Didn't like running it that way. The ring gear works OK just by flipping over, even though I had a New One. Will keep a eye on it. Will be hooked to a 1219 very soon. All I knew was it wasn't much good the way it was. It hasn't been work real hard as of yet, but it has been under load with 16' roller harrow in 3rd & 4th so far still at .007 and don't have any leaks. If it last's it last's & if not I'll fix it. Decompression at shut down might be the answer.......

Good to hear, sounds like it will be Ok. If it does loosen up you will hear a different sound, that is the way my whole episode started.

I always pull the decompression lever on my 720 when shutting it down. Flywheel coasts to a stop that way rather than rocking back and forth.

If I am reading your post correctly, you are saying you torqued the flywheel bolts to 110. That is not tight enough. I don't have a service manual for your model, but I would expect the torque setting to be more like 250.

You're not following his whole story. He had a converted taper lock flywheel. The bolts only keep the flywheel from spreading more. The large nut holds the flywheel tight on the taper which also grabs the crank. His bolts were originally torqued to 110 ft lbs, then the nuts were welded. He cut the nuts off, which was a no no...

The weld was ground off because one bolt was loose. We've owned this tractor for years, knew it had a taper lock. Crank shaft end
play went the .025, something changed at some point it time? I knew it was wrong & wasn't any good the way it was. Still say so far
so good. But if it changes . we'll replace the flywheel.
