electronic ignition

Hello, I am posting about a problem I have with a electronic ignition on my JD 4400 combine, I know this is a tractor form however I'm hoping some one on this form can help me.This ignition system looks to be a replacement for the points and condenser that the combine came out with, It had two wires going into the bottom of the distributor, one goes to the coil and the outher one is missing after I r&r'd the starter, it looks like it went to a relay on the inside of the engine compartment however the pigtail wire that is the same color coming from the relay is hot all the time even with the ignition switch off ,that would mean the wire to the distributor is hot all the time I'm wondering if this is correct way it should be wired, Thanks for any help,Al

Contact Pertronix and ask them for correct information on wiring their unit. Simple huh?

Like JMOR posted check with Pertronix (or who manufactured) FIRST versus what any of us might "guess." That being said if you look at a few typical (maybe NOT your unit however) wiring diagrams there's TWO wires leading to the ignitor unit, one provides ground and the other hot bias voltage to power the electronics.

TALK TO PERTRONIX or whoever made the unit lest you risk frying something YIKES

If it's a pertronix unit red wire goes to the positive side of the coil and the other black wire goes to the neg. side of the coil, simple hook-up,have installed 10 to 20 of them all the same, by pass the ballast resistor or hook to the inlet side so you have full 12 volts.
