JD- 316 PTO issue

The tractor was running fine, cutting fine, then suddenly it quit. I placed the gear selector in neutral it started right up, on moving the selector off neutral the engine quit. Also, with the selector in neutral when attempting to engagae the PTO the engine quit. I was able to move the tractor by holding the switch in the closed position while engaging forward or reverse. And the battery light stays on. Any help would be great, Thanks
 
Start by getting the alternator working.

For us to help you with that we need to know if it's an early production model with a Kohler single-cylinder engine, or a later production version with an Onan twin-cylinder engine.

It's a Onan twin rebuilt less than 300hrs ago. Not familiar with the J.D. so how do I check the alternator? Voltage back to the battery is 13v I don't have a digital VM so,,,
 
If there is a safety switch in the seat, ck
the connection. If it looks good, run a
jumper wire between the terminals that
comes thru under the seat. If it works
then, it's the seat switch
 
checked safety switches all seem to working fine. As I said it was running and cutting then shut down, re started but no PTO and no moving off neutral. So, ????
