Initial valve clearance for all fuel 70

What's a good cold starting point to set the valves? Also, what's the rule of thumb for how much a given part of a turn gives how much change in adjustment? For instance, turning the adjuster_____ turn clockwise tightens the clearance by _____?

<Maybe this time I'll write it down where I can remember where I wrote it down . . .

Thanks. And special thanks to the vets out there!

Sorry, I don't have a clearance "spec" at hand.

Adjusting screws are 3/8"-NF = 24 threads to the inch.

Check out the chart linked below.

One turn = 0.042" so one "flat" = 1/6 turn = 0.007".
Travel vs. thread pitch

.020" hot IIRC is the spec. So I set them at .022 cold and it has always worked for me. I usually redress the faces of the rocker arms if they appear worn and use a feeler gauge. I never worried about how many turns because I own feeler gauges.

One thing not accouted for is the rocker arm ratio. Stock John Deere 70 rockers are 1.5:1 ratio. So while one flat is .007" at the pushrod, it is .0104 at the valve.
