70 gas generator thinks it is a motor

Hello all. I have a 70 gas and occasionally after shutting down the generator will continue to spin as if it rewired itself into a motor. What causes this, and how do I fix? Thanks. Dave

Voltage regulator points stuck closed can cause it. Delco generators I have will "motor" with the belt off, and battery voltage to the armature terminal..

Good Question Dave, here's the answer:

What causes a Tractor DC Generator, which is basically same as a DC Motor, to spin after the tractor is shut down, is if voltage is present across its ARM post and case/frame/ground. Whats supposed to happen is upon shutdown the VR's internal Cutout Relay is supposed to OPEN. When the tractor starts and the genny produces sufficient voltage, the relay closes so the gennys output can be connected to and charge the battery BUT THEN IT OPENS AGAIN ON SHUTDOWN

What can cause that ?? A typical one is if the Cutout Relay, a part of a Voltage Regulator, contacts stick or hang closed.

If it does it the VR, provided all else is correct, should be replaced else the genny overheats and the battery discharge. Usually if the belt is good n tight the genny isn't able to spin/motor yet the battery still discharges.

BAD STICKING CUTOUT RELAY INSIDE THE VOLTAGE REGULATOR IS MY GUESS, others may have different ideas??
