John Deere A

John Deere A 1951 - Need to replace intake/exhaust manifold. I will need to remove the water pipe above the manifold. Do I need to remove the rod from the governor to the radiator fan?
Tire Question: Has original 11-38 on now. Can I put 13.6 X 38 on? Will this tire be too bulge looking on the ground?

Replacing the manifold can be serious work. Study it carefully and you might find it easier to remove the fan shaft, fan and governor as one unit. The only exception would be if the manifold studs have been replaced with bolts. Then you could slide the manifold out from under the fan shaft. If it still has studs, be prepared to heat the studs, use penetrant on them and try not to break them off in the head. Good Luck.

Randy,
I kinda cheated when I did my 51 A. I cut the nuts off the studs then I pried the manifold up as much I could. That done I took a saws-all to the studs high enough up so as to leave enough to get a vice grip on them after I got the manifold off. Had to heat the head a little and was able to get the studs out. Cleaned up the head real well. Slide the new manifold and gasket in place then screwed the studs in with double nuts till they tightened up. Then removed the double nuts. Put one nut back on and tightened up. Actually worked pretty nice. Better than having to pull the radiator and fan shaft or the governor and fan shaft. Good Luck!
John
