Check those spark plug gaps

I just received 4 new Autolite 3116 plugs for my model B's. Started to put them in and discovered that the gaps were way off. Yes, I know that you should always check the gaps of new plugs, but in the past they have usually been correct. But these were way off. Two of them had almost no gap and the other two were set at about .015". Has anyone else run into the problem lately?

I bought some new ones also and they were the same way. I always check mine before I install them. What do you usally set yours at I think I set mine at 020.

Dad always set the gap on his spark plugs with the small blade on his
Barlow pocket knife. The fat side of the blade was about .030?.
Never failed to work on the car, truck, or tractor.

Reminds me of a funny story in an old Field Service Bulletin that was recommending service men use a good 0.030" spark plug gauge. The introduction to that section of the Bulletin was as follows:

"In years past, service men went out to service
tractors with two crescent wrenches and a pair
of pliers. They always set spark plug gaps with
a thin dime or by measuring the distance with
their eye. We once received a letter asking us to
advise the writer if two nickels would do in
place of a thin dime."

I always gap them to specs. I don't expect them to be right straight out of the box. Honestly though, if they're within a few thousandths I don't think it matters too much.

That is definitely a good one. LOL

Thanks for sharing It!
