Jd D, need brain trust

Working on a d, later styled, hand start.
Thing hasn't run in who knows how long.
Head completely rebuilt, pistons pulled,
rings check good, spark on the correct side
at correct time. But the blasted thing
won't start. It will rarely fire and of
course sends the exhaust can sky high. :)

So my plan this weekend is to drag it
around and get some oil pressure built.
Hopefully it won't take too much dragging.
Then hopefully put plugs in and it will
run..... I don't have a lot of faith. If it
doesn't build oil pressure or run, I need
help. This thing must be possessed. I tried
hand cranking, but with 0 luck.

Thanks.

If it were mine and have everything timed as you say you do I would pull it and it will probably crank in a short distance. You mag is firing but not hot enough to hand crank. Make sure you got gas in the carb and pull start it in 3 rd gear. Be sure to look at oil pressure gauge soon as it starts.
Have fun I love them old D's. Rebuilt 2 in the past year.

They are sweet machines. This is the second d, and 8-9th jd. These monster engines are just a pain when everything isn't top notch, including my strength.

Let me know if it starts when you pull it about 10 feet😀😀 I'm bettin !!!
I turned this one by hand until I ran out of gas and my buddy came over and we didn't pull it 10 feet and she fired off and ran good. Hand cranked good after that.

Just a shot in the dark here. The D is sensitive to carburetor float height. You should have a fair bit of fuel vapour escaping the compression relief valves when hand cranking. If you can't see vapour, try raising the height of fuel in the bowl just a little bit. unc

Nice looking machine, even if it is in the land down under :).

This thing is on steel, so pull starting should have no traction issues..... Pulling vehicle might. I'll let you know how it goes. I've pulled the carb apart and checked those pesky passages with a drill bit. I'll have to take a look at the float.

I had to use a CLEAR TUBE attached the bottom of the float Bowl, then vertical, set the fuel level correctly.... once the float was set.....they fired right up.... gas was present at the pressure relief valves with choke applied and hand cranking ..

Belt it up to another tractor then you do not need someone else to run the other tractor as my dad has done this numerous times.
