D on a Dyno

We put my brothers John Deere "D" on a dyno last weekend. We were curious how power compared using gasoline, #1 fuel oil, and then with the water injection. The needle on the dyno jumped around a little but showed about 42 hp on each test.

Thank you for taking the time to do this, it makes complete sense to me. The gas has potential to make more power, but it would need a higher compression ratio to do it. And the water just keeps it from knocking. So all in all the same HP. I could potentially see fuel oil making more "lugging ability" since it burns slower.

Sounds about right. Ds officially were rated 42 hp on the belt. Gas Ds supposedly had 10 more hp but that was also with a cold manifold and high compression pistons. 10 hp actually put them a hair above an R.

A long time ago in another forum, the late Duane Larson made reference to a study using different fuels that was made at Kansas State College Ag Engineering Department and was published in 1937. Tractor #2 in the study was an unidentified tractor that had two horizontal cylinders with 6.75" bore, 7" stroke, 3.9:1 compression ratio, rated 900 RPM (which sure sounds like a "D"). That tractor developed around a 2 HP increase with kerosene and distillate compared to regular grade and premium grade gasoline. The report stated "These results are as might be expected since the engines were designed for low-grade fuels and the compression ratios in each case were low enough for the low-grade fuels but not high enough for the better grades of gasoline to make use of their potentially greater power-producing capacity through the use of higher compression pressures".

The best fuel combo we found for the low comp. is one gallon of diesel to 4 gal of 87 gasoline. Put diesel in a can then add 4 gallon of gasoline.

That would be a UTube best "seller"!! Would love to pipe it out across the fields at my place in VT so the neighbors could enjoy it!

Can you start it on that mix or do you need pure gas, warm up and make the switch?
One day I'll run my B on Kero just to say I did it.

Never done it myself, Operators manual instructions says to close radiator shutters, start engine on gas and run up to 190 degrees, then
switch over to main tank. When I get mine back together with the new radiator core and working shutters, Id like to give it a try as
well....Tom
