My new H with a couple questions

Picked this H up yesterday for a $1000 took about an hour to get it running and back it off the trailer. I have a couple questions
What is the proper way to shut it off? I’ve been just choking it. Where do I check the rear end oil ? Thank you in advance.
I can’t seem to upload pictures for some reason.

all depends, year? mag? distributor? should have a push pull button. push to stop. who knows whats been done to it.
check diff. level with plug on left side by clutch rod.

Best way is to shut off the gas and let it run out of fuel. Saves lots of headaches in the longterm, it'll keep your crankcase from filling with gas after a sticking float in the carb

All of our H's (I think we are up to 8 now?) are all on mags so we shut the fuel off and wait. With as little fuel as the H uses, sometimes it takes a little bit for it to die. (As compared to my D, which after about one pop dies) It is my understanding the reason for turning off the fuel was back in the day that would clear any tractor fuel left in the line so that it could be switched to gas to start again next time.

Congratulations on your "new" tractor. They're a fun little tractor. First, "H" tractors are very easy to flood so choking them to stop the engine causes two problems - harder starting due to the flooding, and that extra fuel from choking will wash the oil from your cylinder walls and may dilute crankcase oil somewhat. All "H's" were all-fuel tractors and the instructions in the operator's manual for stopping the engine stated that the fuel was to be shut off and the engine would stop when the fuel in the carburetor was used. And the starting instructions said to drain the remaining fuel from the carburetor and switch the fuel valve to "G" (gasoline) which would then fill the carburetor for starting. Some owners have cobbled up a kill switch for the magneto. I prefer to stop mine by simply overriding the throttle stop spring which completely closes the throttle butterfly, and as Brandon mentioned, it's always a good idea to shut off the fuel as well to prevent a flooded crankcase because of a possibly leaky needle and seat in the float valve.

All had mags. No button. Shut off gas. Clutch is on right.
Just realized you might be lost and thinking Farmall.

Thanks for all your answers. I like the little Deere just need to stop a gas leak at the sediment bowl , change some oils and be good to go.

(quoted from post at 03:31:38 05/22/18) Thank you I thought that might be the check plug but it seems kind of low. Must not hold much oil.

For your info, here are the fluid capacities for the "H":

Crankcase - 4 1/2 Qts (Including 1 Qt for filter)
Transmission - 2 3/4 Gal. (per Dir. 214, 248, 276) (FSB 167-S and OM-R2011 say 3 gal)
Radiator - 5 1/2 Gal.
Fuel tank - 7 1/2 Gal.
Gasoline tank - 7/8 Gal

Best way to stop any mag equipped tractor is to install a kill switch that grounds the mag so no spark is made. So easy too. Just an on/off toggle switch. I had one B start when I was working on engine and I nudged the flywheel and it took off running. Hood/tank was off so fan nearly got my coat. This also prevents accidental start by someone when at show or other event. I tried to post pix of switch on H and a nicer one on a B, but pix load up must be off tonite. Email me and I can send a pix that way. George
