I bought a Deere yesterday and wanted to figure out what it is. The tag is gone. It has an MT grill but appears to be a 40 or 420. It has factory 3ph and straight steering. What are the differences I might see between a 40 and 420? Thx

You can take the number off the motor block under the generator and get a form from a JD dealer and they can get you a new serial tag. It will take you several months but it can be done. I had a 420 that I got one for about 12 years ago.

A '56 420 has the starter held in by a set screw, a '57 420 has the starter held by 2 bolts and straight steering wheel, a 58 has 2 bolts on the starter and a slanted steering wheel.
