JD B Carburator

I'm restoring a 51 JD B. The carburetor appears to be running a little rich. Is there any adjustments I can do outside or is it something I have to take apart?
Thanks

I don't know JD, but on my Farmall H I finally got the I&*T manual, the owner's manual, the IH service manual, and another one I think, and finally found all the information how to adjust the H carb. What I found was that each manual had 90% of the info, but it was a different 90%. Had to put it all together to get a complete picture.

They are adjustable. standing on the left side by the carb. there are 2 adjustment needles sticking out the top middle of carb. The one nearest you is for the idle mixture and the farthest one is the load adjustment. clockwise screws them in and leans the fuel mixture. It may not take much.

Here are a couple links to the correct procedure for adjusting the idle and load needles on that carb. It should be a # 67 carb nless someone has changed it out, but they all (DLTX) adjust same. This procedure will also tell you whether or not it is just an adjustment problem or if the carb may need re-built. There are other reasons that could cause it to run rich, other than needle adjustments. A plugged vent passage inside and / or too high a float level and/or fuel leaking into float which makes it too heavy which will let it fill too much and run rich. A good start point , tho, with the adjusters is , idle ( flywheel side) 1 1/2 turns out from being closed and load (clutch pulley side) 1 turn out. Make sure and clean ALL carbon off your plugs and/or put new plugs in it before trying to adjust it. Let us know what you find.
NOTE: just found out the link will not load on here so my e-mail is open if you e-mail me I know it will send that way.

OK, Thanks to all. I will try the adjustment needle for a start. If not I will purchase the manual.
Thanks
Jeff

If it is running a little rich at idle, try turning the closest needle to you in a little bit at a time and see if it cleans up. If it is rich under load, do the same to the rear needle under load and see if it cleans up. You should have a good manual anyhow, so I would still get that. But one thing I would also get is the Robert's Carb video on dltx single barrel carbs. At $15, it is worth every penny and more for all the knowledge you will get out of it.

Here is the address for the page

One thing I have found in DLTX carburetors is rust in the threads for the needles. You could screw the needles down until it felt like they were bottoming out, but the needle was bottoming out on the rusty threads, giving a false adjustment and resulting in an overly rich mixture. Get a 1/4' X 40 tap and clean the threads.

seems like the attitude of posting party is when all else fails buy a manual. I say buy the manual first, then a parts book and get to understand your tractors technology of the time. I suppose folks just don't want to do the learning curve but rather a fast explanation.
