John Deere 730 diesel wont start

This tractor has been sitting 10 plus years. I changed the filters and bleed the air per the owners manual. I have fuel at the line going into the inside of the block which i assume feeds the injectors. I took the top cover off over the injectors. I open the lines at the injector. No fuel. Where do i go next. This was my grandfathers 730 diesel. Im pretty wet behind the ears on the two cylinders. Ran a few as a kid but never worked on them. Thanks all for the help in advance

If you took the TOP cover off of the block, you are actually looking at the injection PUMPS.

When you took the top cover off, there was a part that passes through the top cover and connects with a steel line to the fuel tank.

This is the fuel return line.

Fuel is forced into the injection pump assemble through the line you seem to be aware of on the RH side of the block, fills the passages in the injection pump "bracket", then excess fuel exits though the fitting you took off, that passes through that cast iron top cover, the "fuel pressure relief valve", and returns to the tank.

Take the innards out of that valve, set them aside for now, noting order of assembly, and crank (or pull start) the engine 'till fuel is exiting the top of that valve, meaning the pump assembly is purged of air/full of fuel.

You can then put the relief valve back together and the engine should start.

If NOT, the "rack" (9) and/or sleeve (7) in the individual I.P.'s may be stuck in the "no fuel" position need freeing up, or the linkage between the racks and the governor may be somehow stuck.

If that seems to be the case, post back for more help, DO NOT try to start the engine after lubing and freeing them up unless you understand how they work, and are SURE they move freely, you don't want the engine starting and overspeeding and not be able to shut it down!

Thank you i am going to check this out tomorrow. Im assuming the "rack" is all under the cover i took off? How hard is it to remove, if thats necessary?

The two bolt top cover comes off after the return valve is removed that goes through the cover. Use a bright light and watch the rack, it SHOULD move left/right when the throttle is moved from stop to open, and back to stop again. No movement means one or both pump plungers are stuck.

Good morning all. I see what you guys are talking about the rack. It appears the plunger on the right side is stuck, ive sprayed it down with penetrating lube cant get it to wiggle. Whats my next move fellas?

I should add the left side plunger is moving freely and when you pull the throttle lever back to stop position the plunger comes way out pushing rhe rack to the right.

The sleeve is not stuck, the PLUNGER is. I see that a lot on pumps in for repair, like the JD R in awhile back. Most need torn down to free up the stuck parts of the old stale fuel.

I got the injector out, so to tear down i assume you just take the nipple out where the fuel line screwed on?

Most likely doesn't need to be torn down, just freed up. Feel free to give me a call and I will tell you how to do it. I have done many here. Al 231/757/0064
