MT pinion depth

With these old tractors will the wear pattern be right in the middle of the teeth or will they be skewed a little bit due to wear. I'm getting ready to adjust the pinion depth and it is a pain to get that race out to adjust the shim. Right now I have the end play set and the backlash set for this pinion depth. I will have to readjust the backlash after moving the pinion.I'm looking on the old pinion and it might read 2.812 ,it's hard to tell with the rust. The new pinion is 2.812 also but the wear pattern is showing it needs some shims removed.

Anyone have some experience with this?

I hope you're not using that pinion gear.

That is the old one where the pinion number is hard to read the last number.
