520 operating a 6' tiller issues

While running a 520 to operate a King Kutter 6' tiller it starts out running fine. After several passes it starts to run terribly and will not run at all w/o the choke applied. Even at full choke it runs badly, barely running at all limping back to the shed. After letting it cool a while I started tilling again, running fine, and the same thing happens again. I did notice the temp was nearly 200 degrees. Is the tiller too much for the 520 or is the carb in need of rebuild? It has new cooling fluids, engine oil, points, cond, rotor, cap, plugs 15 hours ago. Your suggestions for a solution or cause are needed.

I would check your fuel supply. Under high load demand of the tiller, the governor is opening up the throttle to give the engine more fuel, but you aren't getting it. Remove the fuel line to the carburetor and see what sort of flow you get for how long. If it slows down, you have a problem.

Good day Randy G....
I own a JD 520...run a five foot tiller in our to be Garden ....was acting like your JD 520....after I cleaned serviced and set the carb all is great....I love the transmission with the creeper gears and power steering.

On a side note...I also run the same tiller on my 1963 MF FE 35 X 3 cylinder Perkins diesel six speed Transmission. Both Tractors are a great fit for my acreage.

I think you may be correct jd2cylman. I did remove the sed bowl and checked the gas flow. I pushed the top button on top and it seemed restricted. I twisted the bottom of the small inlet with the rubber o ring, which looked rather bad, and it seemed to flow better. Think a sed bowl fuel shut off and carb rebuild is in order? I've had the 520 20 years used only for tractor rides and never touched the carb.

I run a 6 foot tiller on my L-2900 Kubota 3 cyl Diesel (about 18 HP) and it handles it fine..

I'd say your 520 should have NO trouble with it..probably even in 2nd..!!

At 30+ HP, the 520 should be over-kill..!!
