GM clutch slipping

Hooked the GM up to the Disk today and the clutch was slipping I was going to adjust it when I noticed a lot of play in the flywheel about 3/16?. Would this cause it to slip? Thanks Mark

Won't hurt to get the end play correct. Then inspect the clutch facings and see it all is put together properly. And then readjust the clutch. The only 2 cyl. clutch I ever had slip was on a late B I just bought and it was not installed properly with the facings in the correct locations.
Now if your G is hopped up on HP and the disk is large those clutches in them were not made to handle the extra power. IIRC tractor pullers have to tighten the "begeezes" out of them to get them to hold.

Check the three operating bolts in the clutch, are they free to move? If one is rusted solid you get a good snap but still slip.

((((IIRC tractor pullers have to tighten the "begeezes" out of them to get them to hold.))))

Not necessarily so. My 943 cube 150plus HP G clutch is no tighter than my stock G. I rebuilt it with new dogs, toggles, pins and bolts and springs as well was linings Adjusted properly it holds just fine and you don't need to bend the lever putting it in and out.

Check what ET said. I've been working on a B that has a clutch operating bolt stuck and yes it snaps in and out but if I tighten the stuck one too much the clutch won't disengage or if I don't tighten it enough it will slip. Watch all three bolts for same amount of movement while engaging and disengaging the clutch.

Mine has one but it was added for driver comfort. Easier to reach when you need it with a corrected bend in it.

I agree with the driver comfort thing. The G has that short, bent, clutch handle. Seems like I had to reach way over to get it, compared to my 720.

Guys, Guys...don't ya know that that SHORT Clutch Lever (with the perfect Ball on the end) was DESIGNED to hit your knee-cap exactly if you were plowing using the original trip-hitch and chain..!!

Felt so good...I swore I'd Never walk again more than once with that..!!

A JD 2-cylinder tractor clutch need not be adjusted tight..I pull an F-145 4x16" on my 720 D. and it never slips with it adjusted so light, it hardly snaps at all..
With 250# on the front, the front off the ground in 2 nd gear in tough ground, nope..NO hint of slippage at all..(yea..and still NO smoke from the exhaust..!)..
These Babies ( if they are properly maintained) were built with SO Much Over-kill, the clutch is the least of your concerns.!

If you do have a "stuck" clutch bolt..ya BETTER Cautiously free it up..

I say Cautiously because those "stuck Bolts" are the reason so many Clutch-Drums have been trashed ( Broken)..

If you remember correctly...the back end of those have a "T" shaped end that, if twisted ( as in wrenching the castle nut hard) WILL pop out a nice big chunk of Clutch Drum...right where the Clutch-Brake rides on the drum..

They are getting harder to find and prices are rising as the number of them diminishes.. (Pass the Word)..

943 cube 150plus HP G? Is that a typing error? Or something similar to a "biggest fish story"?
