Re: 51 A starter help

Bottom or top mounted? They're both different. Both use the same drive..10 teeth, but different in construction. Both will need to be completely dismantled. The bottom mounted is the easiest to re assemble. I have rebuilt MANY of both and doing a top mounted one now.

Any small parts that may go flying if I just try to take it apart? If i take it apart I can usually get it back together pretty easily.

You have a Delco 1108950 starter. Careful when removing as its very heavy. If you have a parts book study the starter diagram. The drive slides off the front of the armature shaft and behind it is a fiber/leather brake washer. In front of the drive may be a washer. The brushes (4) should stay in place. 2 of them are connected to the windings by small screws. Those will need to be removed to remove the brush plate. Don't remove the other 2 to help identify the 2 removed to help in re assembly. There may also be a washer at the very rear of the brush plate between the commutator and brush plate.

"Heavy" is the operative word! I found that if I was going to get it out myself that a hydraulic jack with a styrofoam "cradle" cut out of it to let the started down into worked well, Need to be sure that the jack has a solid surface on it (may need to attach a platform of plywood for the styrofoam to sit on). Once the started slides out of the opening in the frame it gets heavy quick!

And putting it back in is no fun either!!!

As always.. life got in the way again and I haven't tore this apart yet. however.. I saw this... Anyone ever seen this before? I was unaware of any high torque starters that would fit in the bottom location for an A. It has peaked my interest!

I looked at their web site one time and there pretty pricy. I rebuilt 48 A starter because it was dragging. wasn't nothing to it. I cleaned up the armature put in new bushings and brushes put in a new bendix and top switch and stud. I put new 2/0 starter wire and it will whirl over real good now.

So I called them yesterday. Very very knowledgeable. Gave me a ton of advise in trouble shooting my starter and gave me some prices on that fancy new starter. $550 for the A starter. If my tractor was stock don't know that I could justify the coin to do the upgrade but with all the extra compression I have my stock starter has struggled to start the tractor anyway. Might be something to look into.

I bought one of those same starters last year from IMI. I ended up sending it back for a refund for a multitude of reasons. A) It didn't fit right and after talking to them I remachined some of the mounting pieces to make it at least half-a$$ work. The way it was out of the box, the starter drive only engaged about 1/8" of the ring gear. IMI acted like it wasn't a problem, but anyone with a ruler could measure from the mounting flange to the end of the starter drive and see it was way different than the OEM Delco starter that it was supposed to specifically replace. B) The starter drive would stick in the out position and sometimes would not retract. After taking it apart to fix that, you could see all the plastic parts inside this very expensive starter. After fixing it so the starter drive would retract properly and getting it on the tractor, C) it would not spin the engine as fast as the stock starter would. It is only a 2.2kw motor, if they put a motor on it up in the 4kw range, they would have a decent product.

I don't know what you have done to your engine, but you are probably better off with a stock starter. I am back to the stock starter but have plans to machine a bracket to put a top mount starter on it.
