John Deere M51 mower for M tractor

Does anyone have any experience with this mower? I have an M tractor, and I would like to try to mow with it. One of these mowers is for sale nearby, and I am considering checking it out. What should I look for on a used mower, and is this mower decent on an M? I have never attached anything to the drawbar of the M. It appears to rigidly mount to the drawbar, and then utilize one of the lift arms to operate a chain on a sheave(I assume to raise and lower the sickle bar). This is purely going to be used to cut a few fields on a hobby farm, so no serious usage is planned or expected of it.

Hi,
I have one for my M and have used it in the past. Mows very nicely. Need to have the lead set correctly and have decent guards and knives. Good Luck!

I have one for my 52 m. Got it from my Dad who bought it new with a new 47 M. We mowed a lot of hay back in the 50s and 60s with it. Always worked great.

I have one also mine is a 6' bar. I've always have use #5 & 8's in the past, some of the parts interchange & most don't. If they are set
right they mow well. I put the frt weights on mine when I mow all the hills around me + help keeps the frt end from crouding to the right
as much. I like them because they don't take up much room to store. If you build a pallet for them to sit on, can be installed & removed
in 10 minutes.

I ran a No. 5 mower on my MT with a 6 foot bar. Once I went through everything and got it set up right it mowed real nice and the 6 foot bar was a nice match for the MT. In tall grass it worked the tractor but did not overpower it. The No. 5 was easy to work on and very simple to understand. I do not have any personal experience with a No. 51 though.

Trouble with buying implements separately is on most some of the needed brackets and things get lost. Hopefully they have an original manual for it and you can see if it has all the parts before buying it. The original manuals are a must have item when hooking up and setting these type implements.

I thought the M51 was a mid mount mower?

I have a mid mount for an M / 40 in good shape, but I am missing all of the drive line, pulley, and rear brackets...

So if you need something! Let me know!
