John Deere 5105 opinions

I’m looking at trading in my smaller 36hp tractor for a John Deere 5105 4x4 with 1600hrs

Anything to watch out for with this particular model? The tractor I’m looking at looks to have been taken care of pretty well. I need a tractor with a little more weight and heavier loader. Currently the work I’m doing with my compact tractor is taking a toll on it.

I have one with the IIRC 521 loader ? Nice machine. Loader is pretty strong you really have to watch how much counter weight you have and what you are lifting. Mine is a pretty early one but still only has 600 hours on it. My loader would drop if you tried to do a slow lift with some weight on it. I found out the lift check valves in the loader valve were plastic and the replacements are aluminum. That solved that issue. I also added an electric fuel pump as this machine has no transfer pump mounted on the engine. This made it WAY nicer to bleed the air out after a filter change ! The factory hand primer pump mounted on the filter base never seemed to work right.
So how much are they asking for it ? I have thought about selling mine as I really don't use it much.
I had smaller machines before but they just didn't have enough loader lift height and capacity to do much. The 5105 is really good there and still can maneuver real good in tight spots. I wish the RH sifter was synchronized so when in high gear going up a hill you could down shift on the go as they don't have a lot of HP for running the roads.

They are asking 22K for this one but you know how that goes as far as asking price vs what they will really take for the tractor.

I move a couple hundred 800lb rolls of hay every year and also do some square baling. I think the 5105 would fit my needs pretty well. I want something built heavy enough not to cause lots of wear and tear during normal tasks.

How hard is the loader to remove? The one I’m looking at has the 521 loader. I like to remove my loader when doing hay work or bush hogging.

I lifted a Bridgeport type milling machine to full height with mine. That might of been 2500 lbs. ?

I did take my loader off one time. It was pretty easy to do. John Deere makes there attachments pretty good that way. Practice will make it go faster. I did have trouble getting my quick couplers to reconnect ! Mine are just the push in and pull out type with no outside barrel to release. I doubt they were ever used much if at all ? They had some dirt/rust ? binding them up. I had to totally remove them from my machine and then at the work bench I could take them apart and clean them up and then they were super easy to plug back in. Later models may have a different type coupler.

I have a 521 loader on a 2120....older tractor, but the loader is quick attach, and I
can have it off in about 5 minutes. The sub frames and valve stay on the tractor, you
will need the two stands that slide into the front of the loader arms to dismount it.
Simple and safe. Ben

Got the tractor Saturday and so far I’m really happy with it.

I did notice that it did not have the loader braces with it for loader removal. Any way I could get someone to give me the dimensions of the support tubing. I don’t think they would be hard to make.

I have an original set of JD loader braces, I think they were for a 541 model (MFWD loader). Some number searching may prove they would work for you, or could be modified to fit.

Brand new, never used. Email me if interested, keffective at sbcglobal dot net

I think parking stands for 521 & 541 are different. Photo below is for 521

My loader has a small piece of square tubing with a pin through it. It looks to me like some square tubing with some kind of swiveling foot on it would do the trick. I’m just not sure how long the tubing needs to be.
