John Deere 40 wiring question

I am going to be re-wiring my 40 after finding some pretty bad wires while troubleshooting a charging issue. What wire size/sizes do you guy recommend for the various parts of the system? I've tried looking in multiple manuals for wire sizes but can't seem to find anything.

I would recommend buying a complete wiring harness for your 40 and it will have all the correct wires. It cost more but sure is easier than
making your own.

I use 12g with a 10g on the charge wire. Crimp and solder the terminals and use a double heat shrink boot on each end. Makes for a pretty, durable harness. Takes me 2 to
3 hours to build one this way and about a third of that to just crimp and go. The factory harnesses used 14g wire. Somewhere on a shelf in the basement I have a NOS
wiring harness for a 40.

Rewired both of our 1954 Model 40s with 14g wire.

Hope this helps.

Been pretty busy lately and have been pecking away at this wiring when I can. I'm just about done and noticed there needs to be a resistor between the ammeter "negative" terminal and the regulator "bat" terminal. The wiring I took off the tractor didn't have this resistor, could someone tell me what size resistor this needs to be?
