4430 Barn find basket case. Not sure if we should scrap it?

A friend of mine contact me about buying a 4430 power shift they had,
it was tore apart and never re assembled. When I went to look at it.
it was in far worse shape than I expected. But it had a spare
transmission next to it and power shift clutch pack assy.(shipping
label was from Worthington Ag) the current transmission that was in
the tractor had a PTO ripped out and you could see bearing material
on the bottom of the case. They said a couple people tried to fix it
over the years but kept having trans issues. So they were going to
just replace the entire trans and PTO. Shortly after disabling it the
owner died. It has been Sitting for over 10 yrs. The cement floor in
the building has reaked havoc on The Tractors Paint, compoents, cab
Interior (mice) it's pretty far gone.
So my question is. Is it worth anything more than scrap at this point
. Everything is telling me to stay away from it. But it would be nice
to have a spare 404 engine assuming it's not locked up from sitting.
To get the tractor field ready I would think it would take more money
than its worth. So I'm trying to figure out what would be fair to
offer him. Or just steer clear and put my money towards a running
machine. Any help.is much appreciated..

Depends on price, may be an ok parts tractor. If you take it somewhere to fix transmission it will be costly. The later tractors had hydraulic improvements and I've heard updated rear ends. I think after a certain serial number in 1975. I doubt worth restoring at this point

Get out your pencil and phone around,to get some costs for the parts needed. I think you will soon find it to be too expensive to repair for what it's potential worth would be.

I would think you would be best to part it out.The cab, rear wheels and castings ,scv boxes, motor,3pt and wide front will all sell easily plus you stated you have an extra good P.S.The best way to find value is call a couple good salvage yards and tell them what you have.I bought a nice 4840 6700 hours and ran fine complete with bad P.S. and salvage bid was $5K.It wouldn't be worth that much but you will have an idea.I bought a 7700 T combine with 6R corn head for $120 a ton and drove it home.I bought a 70 4020 P.S. in pieces for $3K and sent it to a tech school for them to fix and then sell for a profit. Theres money to be made parting things out just be prepared to have it around for awhile. I usually only buy tractor that are nice and drive on the trailer but many people make a good living just buying salvage tractors.Good running over 10K hours 4430s w/cab are around 10/12K

Well we went back there and really took a inventory of what was there. Alot of rust and dust...We seen that they blew out the spider gears on the main bull gear. All the original gearing was tore out and in boxes. This is why they just gave up and bought that spare rear end.
So we looked at what was bought for it. It has a 1974 rear end with All the gears everything is complete. Then to my surprise I seen a front and rear clutch pack. They had some residual rust on em but I think they are ok. All the new parts were strapped down on The shipping pallet. We were able to get the engine to turn over so I think we are In Good shape. So we decided to roll the dice and bought it. Pretty much paid a little more than scrap price for it.
So our thoughts are to get the engine running first. If that works we will assemble the rear and see if we can get her driving and then scrap the old rear end to help pay for some of it ... If we fail to get it driving or that power shift just starts killing us In Costs we will just part it out on Ebay. So we figure all we have to loose is our time and effort and maybe hurt our pride a little..lol...we just couldn't bear the thought of seeing it get cut up for scrap...

If we fail to get it working i will get ahold of you. Anything In
particular you are looking for. If you want you and PM me also.

Regular scrap was $165 a ton 2 weeks ago If it weighed 12K would be around $3400.The scvs if good start at $400,The wide front $900,A good JD 3rd link $200 Turbo set up $750 Motor $1500+ 18.4x38 castings and wheels $400 each Cab can bring $1000 needing interior and looks like it is rusty, plus all the parts on pallet plus rear end So if you bought it at scrap you will do better than getting it running and a lot less work.

I think you could get it going. John Deere 4430 power shifts are worth quite a bit of money. You should put it together and run it. If the motor isn?t locked up there?s no reaoson why it would be junk. Don?t part it out.

just curious and i mean no disrespect, but why are 4430 p/s worth a quite a bit of money? i see a lot of them, various shapes, not bring over 10k. should i be buying these?

Well she looked a little rougher in the daylight. "Guess all the girls look better at closing time" haha... On the positive side the engine is free, cab has all of its glass, and new parts look good (both clutch packs and rear end) I'll keep ya all posted on progress. My cousin decided he wants to give her a shot.. he has more time to get it together than I do.

I guess in the bigger scheme of things it would be tough to make it any worse than it is HA!
