51 A generator

I'm following a wiring diagram I got off this page
hooked it the way it shows and my generator wants to
motor . The original generator was junk and my parts
tractor had one off something newer 60 620 maybe we
didn't know . Had the gen checked by our local two
cylinder guy test it he said it tested good . I'm lost
thinking about trying a different regulator . Any
thoughts ?

If hot battery voltage is applied to the Gennys ARM post (and case/frame grounded) it will motor/run like the DC motor it is. One way that can happen is if the Voltage Regulators internal Cutout Relay is stuck closed and that will heat up the genny plus run down the battery if left that way.

Unhook the wire on the VR's GEN/ARM post (or ARM post on Genny) and that should stop it. With the tractor not running the relay should be open meaning the hot battery voltage present on its BAT terminal shouldn't be getting to the GEN/ARM terminal.

The tractor was originally POS ground, is it still that way ?? And was the Genny polarized after service/check as if its at the wrong polarity that can mess up a VR.

Sure the Genny and VR are wired correct ??

Maybe other gents have other ideas??

John I can't do any better than you did for advice. Either its wired correctly and the points are stuck shut in the regulator or the hot wire from the ammeter has been put on the generator armature terminal instead of the battery terminal on the regulator.

Hope this works .

Gen was on a test stand so I figured it should have been polarized correctly . The tractor is being wired as pos ground . With both wires off the gen posts and I touch the bat wire to the arm post it motors .

The wire that connects to the BAT terminal on the VR is connected to the Load side of the Ammeter AND IS HOT BATTERY VOLTAGE. If it somehow gets to the ARM post on a Genny it should spin like the DC motor it is. I asked about polarizing the Genny since at a shop it may have been Polarized for NEG Ground but your tractor is POS ground. Actually just because it spins with hot voltage on the ARM post don't mean its bad UNLESS it still spins once all is hooked up because the cutout relay between the BAT and ARM on the VR should be OPEN with tractor not running.
