2955 hi/lo shot

Got a 2955 green and yellow lemmon that we had for 3 months and used for spreading manure. The planetary gears and sun gear of the hi low unit have stripped. I have been pricing both new, used and rebuilt parts. New and refurbished parts are expensive in the neighborhood of $2,400 and used ones have already been sold to others. I dont know of a source for aftermarket parts for the complete unit or replacement gears. The red raspberry (Massey Ferguson) multi-power and International's TA usually has clutch problems and I never heard of the gears themselves failing when in oil. However, the red raspberry's multi-power can be replaced by a shaft. Is there a way to bypass the hi/low unit? Time and money is an issue. Thanks Hoader

They were available as an 8 speed sans Hi-Lo or reverser but I question whether it will be as simple as deleting ala a 1960's tractor. Somebody who wanted to go the other way in adding Hi-Lo commented the housing had to be changed out so the same may be true for you. Maybe somebody here has done a delete to give a definite idea on this. Sound Gard Body cab or open station?

There will be more to it than just the high low when it's over and done with....The last 2955 I worked on was like that,, and I mean "The last One"...like I tell others when they are good they are great ...when they go bad they are Very bad...your cost will double that amount ..

What Tim said. I did my last one last year. Should have used Tim's idea and bought a case of Tannerite. Good luck.

(reply to post at 22:59:39 05/04/18) Heres a post I copied and put in my email drafts. Silver Tractor in Henegar Alabama used to make the eliminators. This man made his own. Give me gears always is my motto. My 2640 came from a "very honest" fellow. Luckily I paid scrap price for it. One of the pinion gears in the high low unit was wiped out, broke the pin, went out through the drum and the pin had gone through the drum of the unit and was in the bottom of the trans. There was a double handfull of teeth and parts in the bottom when I split it. I ended up beating the drum of the high low unit back into shape and welding the hole up. Put all the "guts" on the shelf and purchased a used input shaft for a non hi-lo tractor. The shaft was the right length but posed an issue with sealing the trans oil in the trans. I put the shaft in the lath and polished it in the area that lines up with the front of the hi=lo drum and plundered Chicago Rawhide for a seal by dimensions and put a seal in the hi-lo drum. This allowed the PTO to continue to run off the drum as originally designed, kept the same charge pump, and totally eliminated all the guts of the hi-lo unit. 8 gears are enough. Occasionally wish hi-lo was there mowing but considering it costs $5K and was basically junk when new i like it setting on the shelf better. The tractor probably has 250 hours on it since the conversion and no issues associated with the trans.

I recognize that post :) 2640 still going strong with hi-lo setting on shelf where it belongs. If 2955 was offered
without it I would assume one could do the same if industrious. If you want to contact me through here I can plunder JD
Parts and offer suggestions. All depends on ability to reverse engineer something designed by some folks smoking some
really good stuff! :)

Shaft(key 12) below is for creeper trans without high-low

Yet there are all those users with 10,000 plus hours on a Mannheim . No brake problems , no high low problems and no pitted wet sleeves . Sometimes still with the original clutch. Depends if the owner operator wasn’t illiterate , too lazy or too ignorant to read and follow the operator’s manual. Or too cheap to service the tractor . Ramy rough operators also destroy equipment .

I doubt the dry clutch disk on a Mannheim tractor lasted 10,000 hrs. I suppose you have documented proof of this feat?????? If clutch reached 10,000 hrs of operation tractor must of had an above average operator.

over 7000 hours on the 2355 with loader. Clutch still worked fine and had lining left when it was traded.

7000 hrs is considerable less than 10,000 hrs(70%)

On a loader tractor vs a field and general use tractor ? All depends if the machine is used or abused .
