John Deere 8630 problem

I'm having low clutch lube pressure in my 8630. Mechanic isn't finding anything yet. What should we be looking for as a cause?

Does it show low in both Hi and Low position??, I'm sure you changed the clutch filter the one in the hinge, the sump screen in the bottom could be plugged, the clutch oil pump could be failing, and of course the HI/low could be failing ,,these are primary reasons...

The hi/low was replaced last fall. Did everything on your list except the clutch oil pump. Is that the pump in the transmission also called the secondary pump?

That pump is in the hinge area hiding in front of the filter "head".

The one in the back is simply for tranny lube.

The clutch oil pump is behind the hinge oil filter, it's a tandem pump, one part sucks oil out of the clutch housing the other develops the clutch operating pressure, they are gear pumps..

Tim, how much oil comes spilling out when you remove the screen plug? Somebody else wound up doing it the last time it was needed but it should be checked again after changing the hydraulic pump last year.

If all is going right there should be only a couple quarts in the clutch housing screen, the one up under the front,, the nasty one... the 2 rear screens will drain the transmission...

on a John Deere 8430

Under the cab, below the clutch pedal, is the "clutch regulating valve".

There's three ports with hex plugs in them, main clutch pressure is checked at the port labeled "CLUTCH".

You can see the port at the lower right in the first photo.

You need a O-ring type hydraulic fitting that matches the port to connect a gauge. (I can't remember the size, offhand.)
