blown carb gasket, how/why?

Here awhile back I had a leak in the bowl gasket of my 70 all fuel when it was on a hillside. Part of it was pouched out on the exhaust side of the tractor. Replaced it with a JD sourced gasket and forgot about it, until recently.
The last time I had it out, about 1 1/2 months ago, it began running poorly, like one cylinder wasn't all there. I was checking the plug wires and noticed puffs of vapor popping out of the region where the gasket was bad before. Not continuously but every 2-4 firing cycles. I checked level in carb with clear tubing/barbed fitting and it was fine. Things came up and I haven't gotten back to it.

Any ideas on what could be going on here?

Thanx!

Engine "backfires" can blow gaskets, including the bowl gasket, 'cause the bowl is vented to the carburetor bore up stream of the venturi.

Or, perhaps the bowl is damaged and doesn't clamp down on the gasket evenly all the way around.
