Model G Clutch

I have a 1953 Model G. Clutch linkage is tight. Clutch has a good snap to it when engaging. The problem is when you engage the clutch especially in the higher gears.....you have to pull back on the clutch handle just a little bit to get the tractor to move. What am I missing? What could be the problem? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

This has come up before on the forum and I think I know the answer, 'cause it's sort of weird. The pulley brake usually isn't adjusted correctly. That allows things on the innards of the clutch to move as they should not. The pulley brake with "adequate" lining should be adjusted so that it will stop the pulley when the clutch is disengaged and the lever held back. If that puts the lever where you don't want it, use the clevis adjustment on the rod that attaches to the pulley brake from the clutch lever. It also seems that sometimes the tightness of the clutch discs adjustment have to be tweaked a bit to get the right combination for proper engagement and disengagement. This all assumes that something in the toggles/ dogbones etc isn't worn on the inside. That little pulley brake can cause some strange happenings that have nothing to do with stopping the pulley. Hopefully, someone who's had the problem and can explain it better will chime in.

Are you saying with the clutch in the engaged position the tractor does not move, then pulling it back some, it does? Does the pulley start to move then stops again when the clutch I fully engaged? I'd say something in the dog bones, levers or sleeve is worn. Sleeve travels too far and takes the pressure off the dog bones.

susandiane, I did as you said to do. First I tightened the 3 castle nuts that adjust the clutch. I went in one counter key hole on each nut. Then I tightened the pulley brake in about 1/4 " closer to the pulley. Amazing...now the clutch works perfect!! Thanks a lot, Errol
