4430 Neutral Safety Switch

Have 1 4430 thatvwont crank with key. I wanted to test the nss. I tried to test the ckt on another 4430 I have that won't crank in gear, but cranks fine in neutral with it disconnected. Didn't think it would do that. On the other that won't crank with key, I am able to jump solenoid behind firewall and crank. Bad solenoid? Thanks!

It shouldn't, something VERY strange here!

Unless the wiring has been modified it's simply in series between the "START" terminal on the ignition switch and the coil in the firewall-mounted solenoid, making what you claim you are observing impossible.

"On the other that won't crank with key, I am able to jump solenoid behind firewall and crank."

When attempting to start the tractor normally, does the firewall-mounted solenoid "click"? if it DOES but doesn't send power to the big starter solenoid, it's obviously bad.

If it DOESN'T "click", it could possibly have and "open" coil or else there's issues with a switch or wiring.

When you say " I am able to jump solenoid behind firewall and crank" are you jumpering the two large studs on the solenoid, or activating the solenoid by putting power to the ungrounded small terminal?

BTW, is either tractor powershift?

Both quad range. I remember the tractor that will crank with nss being disconnected was unhooked when I bought the tractor. Had to crank it in gear to get it home because clutch was out. I repaired clutch and put nss wire back on and now it will not crank in gear, but cranked with it disconnected.

On the other I jumped on 2 large terminals on starting circuit relay. Have battery from switch to small wire on relay when in crank position, but does not activate relay. I can hear a little noise, but no click.

And what was the final fix on this problem?

Make sure to get the correct firewall solenoid. On the one it would crank in gear even with NSS disconnected. Once I replaced solenoid it wouldnt crank at all until I removed a couple of shims behind NSS. Hope this helps.

Sounds as if wiring was attached incorrectly to 1st relay or 1st relay was faulty!

Please explain how an incorrect relay ""that's wired correctly"" from ign switch to ""non-operating neutral start switch"" then to non-faulty relay then to "S" terminal will engage starter solenoid when ign switch key is turned to start position??

Hello Jim. I just got caught in this. 4430 syncro. Start where ever the shifter was. I matter. Ohmed safety switch. Was good. W-23 comes from the key start term to the starter relay and W22 goes to the safety. With w22 disco from relay still start. My starter relay was grounded on that pin.

I remember you told me once to get a service manual and learn how to read it. I think that is very sound advice.

Good to see you in the forums.
