John deere 302a backhoe

I have a jd 302a backhoe all works fine but I have no forward movement. I split the tractor apart and removed the front clutch pack and it is burnt up. I found a used one in good shape for 600.00. But what would make it burn up? Should I go deeper into it or just replace the clutch drum. From what I've read the transmission pump should be working fine since the power steering and all works fine but I have no clue.

It's difficult to diagnose a hyd problem looking at a computer monitor but my 1st guess is low trans pump pressure/gpm flow . How long since hyd filters were changed and trans sump screen checked/cleaned?

I have no idea when the filters were
changed.I bought the backhoe from a guy and
he said that it needed a clutch because it
wouldn't move forward but it goes backwards
fine. So when I tore it apart it does need
a clutch but I knew that wouldn't make it
not go forward so I pulled the forward
clutch pack out and it burnt up. The
clutches looked fine but the aluminum
piston inside was all burnt up and froze
up.I didn't check the hydraulic fluid
pressure.so I don't know about the
transmission pump.I was told that if the
power steering worked fine then the pump
was good. I have no clue

Tractor not moving in fwd could have been caused by leaking seals in fwd clutch pack or worn fwd clutch plates. I still suggest to check sump screen in bottom of trans case & change hyd filters.

Do you think it will be ok to go ahead and replace the forward clutch pack because it needs it anyway. And could it burn it up just running it to check my hydraulic pressure.

Newly installed fwd clutch plates should be fine with tractor sitting still while performing hyd diagnostics. Be sure to install all new sealing rings in fwd clutch assembly.

(quoted from post at 19:28:46 05/03/18) Is there a different hydraulic oil to use
because I've seen where not to use regular
303?

303 is an oil standard that was obsolete decades ago . Shell makes an equivalent hydraulic transmission oil but the actual name escapes me .
