Starting to work on the B. First thing that was noticed about this tractor was front wheel wobble in road gear. Last time it was started, it had rust in sediment bowl, started but
ran rough. Been sitting in the tractor barn for about ten years waiting it's turn for attention. In the process of getting to and removing the rusty gas tank. Today the steering
shaft and worm were pulled and cleaned up some. This is what was found (so far) when the grease was wiped off.

The chipping was likely caused by the wobble. Wobble goes away when the gear is adjusted. Smooth up the contact faces of the worm with fine emery cloth if the chips have raised burrs. Adjust the sector with the eccentric bushing under it.

Also try balancing the front wheels/tires. Have a H that used to shake the steering wheel out of my hand at road speed. Added lots of weight to light spot on wheel and no problem now.

I had the wobble, adjusted the eccentric, stopped the wobble,
However, the adjustment wouldn?t stay.
A friend suggested replacing the screwdriver slot screw with
one of those hard-er Allen head screws that you can tighten better.
That was twenty years ago, still no wobble.

great advice from all. Also, if you adjust the sector gear using the ecentric to close it up with the worm gear, be sure to turn it through from stop to stop with weight off front to check for the "tight spots" going both ways from straight ahead. If the sector gear is worn in the center teeth like most are , and you adjust up to tighten the lash, now it will be way too tight both ways from center where there is no wear and will bind up when you try to turn. Sometimes it's a choice between "splitting the difference" , which will leave a little lash but should improve wobble , or replace the sector gear. I would say yours is too far worn to effectively adjust the lash out.

Years ago some guy wrote in "Green Magazine" that he filed or ground the outer teeth in his sector gear to match the worn part in the center, which basically eliminated the problem you describe. Probably not the ideal solution, but I guess it solved the problem without having to buy a new sector gear.
