The original subject was "Re: John Deere M Fan Belt Replacement".

Hey guys. I am late to the discussion regarding installation of the fan belt on the John Deere M (1952 year model). The one thing I am uncertain about is how to get tension on the fan belt before I tighten all the nuts. I am sure it is very simple..

I assume you have the old belt off ..........

Have the 1.375" nut on the rear of the fan shaft loose enough that you can pry the fan assembly up
in the slotted casting which holds the "whole thing".

Pry up (big screwdriver) the fan to the desired tightness ,and then tighten the nut with a 1.375" crows-foot wrench

Thanks for the response. My question is what do you pry on and from which side. I afraid I am going to damage something in the area. I am assuming you do not have to remove the radiator to do this.

You do not need to remove the radiator.

Assuming the generator is on the tractor, there is more clearance to stick your prydriver in from the left side.

You will not need to move the fan hub very much - be careful not to mess up the governor linkage.
