4020 & Hayland Renovation

After a little time in the shop for repairs finally got the 4020 out to do some thinning & rolling to our hayland.

What brand is the seeder/roller? What's the purpose of thinning your crop stand? You have a nice looking 4020 & I think you did a nice job on the cab interior.

Thanks Jim!

The roller(w/seeding attachement) was fabricated by a local machine shop many moons ago. LOL The seed box is off of a drill but I can't remember the make. JD maybe?

The thinning does several things. Helps reduce the root bound mass of the crested wheatgrass to get it producing better & it's loosens up the soil so it can be levelled / smoothed by the rollers we drag over afterwards.
Our fields haven't received much attention in the last handful of years & the rodents have done a number. There are a lot of grassed over gopher mounds producing a terrain similar to a Baja race course. LOL

We are running fertilizer knives on the cultivator at 12" +/- spacings to minimize the soil disturbance.

Ideally, the fields should be completely reworked but we're starting with this until we can get a rotation in place.

Nice country! Looks like there's a little snow left in those hills?

What we need is a mini high speed disc / vertical till unit. Maybe 10' wide so the 4020 will have a chance of pulling it. LOL
